All-in-One Guide to Charging at Home and Beyond

When you own an electric car, whether a battery electric vehicle (BEV) or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), you will be able to either completely bypass service stations, or make your visits much less frequent. Skipping the fueling station is a great advantage to owning a BEV or PHEV, but these vehicles will need to be charged up.

There are several ways to keep your electric vehicle charged. You can install an electric charger in your garage. This is a most convenient way to charge your vehicle. And, delving deeper into this method, there are several charging levels to consider, each involving a different type of charger and speed of charging..

  • Level 1 charging doesn’t require any special equipment. You would plug your vehicle’s cord right into a normal 120V household outlet. This method is the simplest, but it’s also the slowest. If your vehicle is empty, it can take between 40 and 50 hours to attain a full charge. If you drive an average of only 31 miles a day, this could be the way to go.
  • Level 2 charging is also fairly simple, as the car charges from a 220V outlet – the same outlet your washer or dryer uses. Using this method, it takes between four and ten hours to fully charge from empty. There are incentives available that may cover the cost of the equipment needed for Level 2 charging. Level 2 chargers are what you’d normally find at charging stations installed at public parking areas.
  • Level 3 charging is the fastest method. These DCFC charging stations are able to charge your vehicle from empty to full in a mere 20 minutes. These chargers are currently available at public charging stations. They are the most expensive way to charge, but they’re perfect when you don’t have a lot of time.

It’s recommended to keep your vehicle charged and not let it run completely empty. Topping off is much quicker than waiting hours for a full charge.
